Road Trip Tips to Stay Safe during the Pandemic

Six months after the pandemic announcement in the United States we are realizing that our lives will never go back to ‘normal’.  ‘Normal’ has been redefined.  No matter how you’ve weathered this storm, you’re likely restless and ready to get away, to go somewhere different. With Covid19 still prevalent and planes not the safest mode of travel, many of you are considering a good old fashioned American road trip, and how can I blame you? Having no steady home at the moment, I was on the move during the height of the pandemic driving over 2,800 miles across the country. I learned you can be cautious and responsible while driving across the country, it just requires a bit more preparation.

Know local laws and regulations pertaining to Covid

Check the state tourism board and local chamber of commerce websites to understand the specific laws regarding Covid19. The laws and regulations continue to change so I recommend checking within a few days of arrival.

Mask ON

I have three masks. One in my purse, one in my car and a back up one in my travel bag. Although this is a point of contention for some, it is the law in many places. In most locations I’ve been to across the US you must wear a mask in a public store, that means anytime you are inside a store. Some cities, like Santa Fe, will require you to wear them while walking around downtown.

Pack To-go Meals & PLENTY OF WATER

The healthiest and safest way to eat is to prep meals ahead of time. I like to have different types of cold dishes such as greek quinoa salad and pesto orzo pasta salad. I also bring tons of veggies such as carrots, celery & sweet peppers along with hummus, nuts, organic chips and popcorn. I also make sure I have plenty of water. At least 2 -L bottles and a back up gallon of water. I usually keep one out and keep one cold. I love this travel water bottle by Que that condenses in half to save space when it’s empty. If it’s going to be really hot, then I put a gallon in the freezer the night before (just don’t forget it ;)).

Sanitizer spray & wipes

Although most establishments offer sanitizer at the door, I prefer to have my own. I never know what type they have, if it’s good or if it’s pure alcohol or some sticky gross kind. I like mine to smell natural and feel clean. I keep one in my purse and one in my car. I also have sanitizer wipes and ECooking facial wipes to freshen up on the road.

Roll of Paper Towels

A roll of paper towels has always been on my must list for road trips, but now they are even more important. I use them for anything; cleaning my windshield, spills, gas pumps, windows, you name it. Handle anything and throw it away.

Glass Cleaner

I’ve always have glass cleaner in my car since I don’t have window washer fluid and the water at the gas stations is usually pretty dirty, but now during the pandemic, it’s even more important. Most gas stations don’t offer the window squeegee, let alone clean water and with Covid cases rising in some areas it’s safest to minimize contact.

Bring your own pillow & pillowcase

I love my pillow and I usually bring it, but now with Covid in full force, I don’t leave home without it. I also bring an extra clean pillow case just in case the first case gets dirty.

Call ahead to Restaurants & Hotels

I found that most hotels are open but I always call to make sure. That way I can ask any questions I have and secure my reservation with specific requests if necessary.

When it comes to restaurant hours, Google does not have the most accurate information. I always call ahead. Some restaurants only take reservations as they are spacing tables and thus have limited seating. Wear your mask to enter any restaurant until you reach your table. You can sit at your table mask free but are required to wear it again to move about the restaurant for any reason.

last thoughts

If you choose to venture out on the road or otherwise, please be respectful of others. Everyone has their own way of dealing with this difficult time so I encourage you to be patient and understanding.

Go with the flow and have fun!
